Virtual Art Show of the Month: Piermont Marsh Watercolors by Robert Adzema

December 29, 2021 By Mitchell Eiss

For the month of January, the Piermont Library presents Piermont Marsh Watercolors by Robert Adzema.  You can view the show here https://www.piermontlibrary.org/artist-of-the-month/

From the artist……

Please join me for this virtual viewing of a collection of my watercolor paintings of our beautiful Piermont Marsh.

All these watercolors were painted on location in all types of weather, times of day and seasons of the year.

I paint in watercolors because it is a lightweight and easily transportable medium. Using colors, water and paper, it is a fluid medium for painting which rewards working quickly particularly when trying to capture changing and dramatic light effects or weather conditions.

Painting the Piermont Marsh, Sparkill Creek and the Piermont Pier offers many unique landscape options for the painter. There are the closed and intimate spaces of the creek, the open sky and vistas from the Pier and the mixed and varied landscapes of the marsh and Tallman Mountain as a backdrop.

I hope you will take some time to scroll through my paintings and enjoy the point of view, time of day and the energy of my engagement with the wind, waves, light and colors of our beautiful Piermont landscape.

All the paintings are for sale with a portion of any sales going to benefit the Piermont Library.

All the watercolors come matted in archival mat board.

To purchase a painting please contact robert.adzema@gmail.com. with the number and title of the painting you would like.

More information about the artist can be found at his website: http//www.robertadzema.com  and on Instagram at:  @RobertAdzemaSundials

It’s here! Annual Holiday Gift of Art Show: Anywhere in the World

November 22, 2021 By Mitchell Eiss

We are so excited for our Annual Gift of Art Show: Anywhere in the World!  We hope you will enjoy this very special virtual exhibition and find that perfect holiday gift or that special piece to brighten your home for the holidays.  The show will be up on our website from December 3rd at 7:00 pm through the month of December.  You can view the show here https://www.piermontlibrary.org/artist-of-the-month/

Each piece is priced at $250 or less this year.  If you see something you would like to purchase, please email the library at astarke@piermontlibrary.org.  But don’t delay as works will be sold on a first come, first served basis.  Pieces will be available for pick-up from the library December 20th – 23rd.  Payment can be made by cash or check at time of pick-up.

The Piermont Library’s Annual Gift of Art Show is a favorite holiday tradition in Piermont.  Each year, “art show alumni,” who have had a show in the past, come back to take part in this festive group show.  Normally, we have a gala reception to kick off the holiday season in Piermont, with upwards of 250 people celebrating with live music, delicious hors d’oeuvres and prosecco, and we hope to resume that in 2022.

Proceeds from the show will help support programming at the Piermont Library.  Please call (845-359-4595) or email us (astarke@piermontlibrary.org) with any questions.

We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our artist friends and the community for continuing to support the library and this annual tradition.

We hope you enjoy the show!

PIERMONT LIBRARY TO HOLD ANNUAL ELECTION

November 12, 2021 By Mitchell Eiss

On Wednesday, December 8th, 2021, Piermont voters will be asked to elect three trustees for the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library. The vote will take place at the Library, 25 Flywheel Park West.  Polls will be open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Voting will take place in the library foyer and follow Covid social distancing protocols with a mask requirement.

At present there are three known candidates for three trustee positions*:

  • Mitchell Eiss, a retired financial services executive, who is seeking a second term.
  • Len Hunt, a local building contractor, who is seeking a second term.
  • Cara Stepanian, a lifelong educator, who is seeking a third term.

Among the trustee candidates, Eiss has been a resident of Rockland County for 18 years and of Piermont for 5 years. He retired from the financial services industry after a thirty-year career.  Hunt has been a Piermont resident for 51 years. He has owned Rockland County Home Improvement for 32 years.  Stepanian has lived in Piermont for 13 years. She has taught literature and writing at both college and high school levels.

Voters will be asked to approve an increase to the annual Piermont Library tax levy from $280,500 to $290,000. This represents a 3.39% increase or an average annual tax increase of $8.49 for the

average Piermont taxpayer. The last time the Library sought an increase was in 2014. The Fiscal Year 2023 total budget starting July 1, 2022 is $394,300.

This increased funding will help pay for costs associated with live and virtual programming, additional cleaning services, and existing library services including the purchase of new releases of adult and children’s books, movies, music as well as e-books, digital audiobooks and downloadable music services.

Despite the COVID pandemic’s many challenges, the Library has continued to serve the Piermont community through its resources, curbside offerings, and enhanced virtual programming.  The Library continues to seek new ways to serve our patrons and welcomes any ideas the public may have. While we hope that a return to normalcy grows closer, we are prepared to continue providing all that we can to our community.

As the Library moves toward a full re-opening, we plan to offer our wide range of programs for toddlers and older children, a monthly free film showing, exhibits by local artists, book talks, game nights, local history exhibits, student art exhibitions, concerts, cultural events, adult summer reading programs, mah-jongg and canasta groups. Information about the library, its services and the election is available at www.piermontlibrary.org.

Library Activity Statistics, 2020-2021

  • Of 2,540 Piermont residents 1,371 hold library cards
  • 265 programs offered with a total of 1,870 people attending.
  • 12,594 holdings circulated (7,697 physical items and 4,897 e-books, digital audiobooks and other digital content)
  • 2,281 visitors to the library
  • 1,046 curbside pickups of library materials

*Any registered Piermont voter may run for election as a trustee. Potential candidates are required to submit a petition signed by twenty-five eligible Piermont voters. Blank petitions are available at the Library and must be returned to the Library by November 24th, 2021.
