Create and Sip for Adults- Cubist Ocean Painting

May 25, 2024 By Mitchell Eiss

The next event in our popular series Create and Sip for Adults with Alexis Starke is coming up!  Get ready for summer and join us (virtually) on Thursday, June 20th, at 7:00 pm to create a cubist ocean painting inspired by Mainie Jellett.  We will start out with a colorful slide show of Mainie Jellett’s paintings and other seascapes and then create our own painting using acrylic paints.  We will learn about color mixing as well as cubism and abstraction in the process (drawing skills are not needed!).  You are welcome to work from your own photograph of a favorite ocean scene or use one provided.

Each participant will receive a goody bag with chocolates, a mini bottle of wine, watercolor paper, acrylic paints, and inspiration images. This is a live virtual class and participants are welcome to ask questions, exchange ideas, and share their work. Our projects are always designed to be relaxed and beginner friendly but fun for all levels.

Registration for Piermont patrons is open.  Registration for all opens on Thursday, May 30th at 9:00 am.

Annual Student Art Show

May 16, 2024 By Mitchell Eiss

Stop by the library anytime from June 2nd – June 22nd for our Annual Student Art Show- all are welcome!  Come see what our talented artists have been creating in our Art Classes for Grades 1- 12 with Alexis Starke.

This year’s theme is Magical Marshlands.  Students have explored the magic of marshes across space and time beginning with the Nile River marshes of Ancient Egypt.  Students learned about the natural environment, art, and culture of Ancient Egypt and then created their own pieces using various printmaking techniques.  Next, we studied the bird paintings and prints of artist and ornithologist John James Audubon and then captured marsh birds of our own with ink and watercolor.  We went on site at Piermont Marsh to create plein air watercolors inspired by local artist Robert Adzema.  Drawing on the painted paper collages of beloved illustrator Eric Carle, students produced their own textured papers to use for blue and purple crab collages.  Our middle school and high school students worked from photographs of the Piermont Marsh to envision their own landscape paintings in acrylic on canvas inspired by Norah McGuinness.  Finally, our younger students travelled back in time again to Ancient Egypt to create little hippo sculptures.

The community is sure to be impressed by these delightful and imaginative works of art!
