The Next Local Spotlight Shines on The Coven’s Cupboard

August 23, 2023 By Mitchell Eiss

Near the corner of Ash and Piermont Avenue lies a recently opened gem of a store. You may have walked by and noticed the warm, autumnal decorations that playfully light up the dark, wood-framed exterior. The next time you walk by, step inside and experience something magical and unique. The Coven’s Cupboard is a bright addition to our rivertown community. When you enter the store, head to the back of the shop, where you’ll see the large cupboard — a nod to the store’s name. As your hand reaches into the cupboard to pick up the “love intention” candle and bring it closer to your nose, all of a sudden, the beautiful aroma awakens your senses and draws you closer to what this store is all about.

The Coven’s Cupboard is a metaphysical shop filled with a wide range of items — from scented candles to bath and body products, crystals, handmade jewelry, incense, books, tarot and oracle decks, herbal teas and mugs, smudge bundles, wind chimes, and much much more. The small store is packed from top to bottom with numerous treasures and gifts for family and friends. But as you allow your eyes to flow from one thing to another, you’ll start to realize that they are connected. For example, the Evil Eye that adorns the side of the mugs can also be found decorating the delicate bracelets nearby, all of which offer protection to the wearer, warding off any negative or harmful energy. In fact, the underlying theme of the store is that every item has been carefully chosen to benefit one’s mind, body, and spirit.

But what the customer who buys the product may not realize is that each object has a story of its own. The curated items come from makers near and far — local and international, ethically sourced and fair trade certified, all from small businesses, and many of them handmade by women. For example, the Wayuu bags are hand-crocheted, one-of-a-kind medicine bags that are creations of prayer and art offered by the men and women of the Wayuu tribe in Colombia. The essential oil roll-ons are handcrafted by the women of Thistle Farms — a nonprofit organization in Nashville dedicated to helping women survivors recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. These are just two of the many stories behind all the items in the store. Each one comes from a unique background, but they are all made with love, care, and hope, which get passed on to the new owner.

Even the placement of all the products has been intentionally designed to provide you with a beautiful experience as you walk around the store — one that makes you feel good. We invite you to come inside this magical place, learn the stories behind these intentionally chosen treasures, and experience the positive energy that it generates within yourself.
