September Art Show- Eileen Brady Nelson: Cyanotype an ongoing series…..

August 21, 2025 By Alexis Starke

Join us on Sunday, September 7th, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm for an opening reception for our Art Show of the Month- Eileen Brady Nelson: Cyanotype an ongoing series…..  The show will be on display throughout the month of September.

Eileen Brady Nelson is a fine art photographer, educator, and creativity coach. Based in Piermont, she has maintained her studio here for over 30 years, fostering an atmosphere of of artistic exploration and collaboration.  In the early 90’s she was a member of the Piermont Flywheel Gallery with fellow Piermont residents, Margaret Grace and Alan Gussow.

In July 2025 EBN was a featured artist on the tour of “Upstate Artist Studios” of the Hudson Valley.   During the workshop participants collaborated on the making of a 6×8 foot cyanotype mural entitled PEACE.  Eileen Brady Nelson’s ongoing cyanotype series will be the subject of her current show at Piermont Library in September.

The cyanotype process is one of the earliest photographic techniques. Developed in the 1840s by English scientist Sir John Herschel, the method gained prominence through the work of botanist Anna Atkins, who employed it to document plant specimens in exquisite detail.

Throughout her career, Brady Nelson has demonstrated a deep commitment to hands-on artistry, emphasizing the importance of fatto a mano—the handmade process. Whether crafting limited-edition black-and-white silver prints in her darkroom, producing large-scale cyanotype photograms and murals, or exploring encaustic techniques, her work consistently reveals the unmistakable presence of the artist’s hand.

Brady Nelson earned a BA in Art History from Queens College and pursued advanced studies in photography at the International Center of Photography, Pratt Institute, Università di Firenze, and the Duke Center for Documentary Studies.
