PIERMONT LIBRARY TO HOLD ANNUAL ELECTION DECEMBER 11, 2024

November 27, 2024 By Alexis Starke

Legal Notice for Piermont Library 2024 Elections

PIERMONT LIBRARY TO HOLD ANNUAL ELECTION DECEMBER 11, 2024

On Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, Piermont voters will be asked to elect three trustees for the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library. The vote will take place at the library, 25 Flywheel Park West.  Polls will be open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

At present there are three known candidates for three trustee positions:

Mitch Eiss

Mitch has been a Library trustee for seven years and is seeking a third term. He has been a resident of Rockland County for 25 years and resided in Piermont for the past 7 years. Mitch retired from the financial services industry after a 33-year career.

Len Hunt

Len Hunt is a lifelong Piermont resident who has been on the board for the past 6 years.  He started his own business “Rockland County Home Improvement Corp” in 1989 and has served Piermont and the surrounding residents for over 36 years.  He and his son also own and run the L&M Iron Railing Company which was started in Piermont in 1975.  Len is an avid reader and lifelong learner and will be seeking his 3rd term as a Piermont Library Trustee.

Anne O’Brien

Anne O’Brien is seeking her first full term after serving as an interim board member for just over a year.  She has been a Piermont resident for 12 years and has lived in Rockland County for most of her life. She is a retired elementary teacher from the South Orangetown Central School District where she taught for 30 years. Anne has served as a board member on the Piermont Rowing Club and has been actively involved in several community activities and organizations including Grace Church’s Midnight Run for the Homeless, the SOCSD Food Pantry, and Keep Rockland Beautiful.

Any registered Piermont voter may run for election as a trustee.  Potential candidates are required to submit a petition signed by twenty-five eligible Piermont voters.  Blank Petitions are available at the library and must be returned to the library by December 2, 2024.

Voters will be asked to approve an increase to the annual Piermont Library tax levy from $301,720 to $307,754. This represents a 2% increase or an average annual tax increase of $4.90 for the average Piermont taxpayer. The Fiscal Year 2025 total budget starting July 1, 2024, is $474,920.

This increased funding will help pay for costs associated with live and virtual programming, and existing library services including the purchase of new releases of adult and children’s books, movies, music as well as e-books, digital audiobooks, and downloadable music services.

The library has continued to serve the Piermont community and continues to add new resources and programming to our offerings. The library continues to seek new ways to serve our patrons and welcomes any ideas the public may have.

The library offers a wide range of programs for all ages, free film showings, canasta and mahjong lessons and open play, exhibits by local artists, book talks, game nights, local history exhibits, student art exhibitions, concerts, cultural events, adult summer reading programs, and much more. Information about the library, its services and the election are available at www.piermontlibrary.org.

Art Show of the Month- Daniel Kazimierski: Camera Obscura/ Manhattan

November 21, 2024 By Alexis Starke

Stop by anytime in November for our Art Show of the Month- Daniel Kazimierski: Camera Obscura/ Manhattan.  All images in this exhibit were taken with Lens-less/Pinhole Apparatus also known as Camera Obscura, which translated from Latin means Dark Chamber. Due to an exceedingly small pinhole aperture that the camera is fitted with, the exposures are lengthy which, depending on lighting conditions, may take from a few seconds to a few minutes or longer. This kind of camera does not have a viewfinder or shutter, thus the photographer must rely on intuition while taking pictures.
