Julie Cahn

I have taken many, many photographs of beautiful natural scenes in various locations over the course of my adult life, but never before have I taken so many pictures of the same place as I have of the Creek and River just footsteps beyond my front door. When I challenged myself seven years ago to try painting for the first time, all my paintings were also of the Creek and River. Some of those earliest paintings can be found in this exhibit.

It’s not that I am lazy or don’t get around. On the contrary, I am always on the move, a novelty seeker in search of the next most beautiful location or natural phenomena.

It’s just something about the ever-changing shapes and colors and tones of the water and the fluid sky above that has entranced me to such an extent that I have come to observe more fine details in the moving image before me than I have ever stopped to notice before.

The eighteen paintings and twenty-one photographs on exhibit here for the month of October are a small example of the thousands of different but no less beautiful moments I have captured along the shores of the Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean.

Our river and this estuary are truly my muse, as is the ocean that draws them in and sends them back out with the force of our rotating earth twice daily, every day, now and forever.
