Friday, December 5: Scrooged (1988) directed by Richard Donner, starring Bill Murray.

The holidays are fast approaching. What we need to get us through the madness of it all is a hysterically funny updating of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol, starring Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a network TV president (now there’s a sympathetic profession!) who’s perhaps the most cold-hearted man ever—an evil, selfish, crass executive who caters to the lowest-of-the-lowest common denominators, firing people whenever he wants to and for the flimsiest of reasons.

Frank’s holiday “spirit,” of course, will be given a painful booster shot by three vengeful ghosts. Cross is taken on a trip through his past to his future, accompanied by hilariously sadistic ghosts David Johansen and Carol Kane (just watching Kane’s diaphanous little fairy punching Murray in the stomach like Muhammad Ali is reason enough to see this film), so that he can achieve redemption. Also features Robert Mitchum and John Houseman in wonderful cameos.

Next Film:

  • January 9th 2009: Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 masterpiece The Conversation

The January screening will be shown on the 2nd Friday of the month, Jan. 9th.
